LA RICERCA
Lo scopo principale dell’indagine è l’individuazione ed il censimento sistematico dei Complessi devozionali similari ai Sacri Monti ed ai Calvari. La pubblicazione è espressione dei due obiettivi principali della ricerca: la redazione di una Carta europea dei Siti, allegata al volume, e l’istituzione di uno specifico Centro di Documentazione. Nel primo caso la Carta dei Siti di cui oggi si dispone costituisce, pur fra le evidenti disuguaglianze di catalogo fra un Paese e l’altro, un indispensabile strumento di lavoro e uno stimolo per completare e integrare le lacune con nuove indagini. Sul piano della conoscenza più generale e della valorizzazione di questi Siti, la stesura della Carta consente poi di tracciare inediti percorsi di promozione legati fra loro da comuni elementi religiosi, culturali e ambientali. Inoltre la Carta dei Siti pone di fatto "automaticamente" in rete una pluralità di soggetti offrendo loro la possibilità di interloquire sui temi condivisi e non rinviabili della tutela, conservazione e gestione di queste realtà. A tale dibattito la Regione Piemonte ed i Sacri Monti di Belmonte, Crea, Domodossola, Ghiffa, Orta, Varallo, istituiti a Parchi e Riserve naturali, contribuiscono mettendo a disposizione i risultati di un’esperienza più che ventennale di lavoro,derivante dalla gestione diretta dei Complessi devozionali. Per questo motivo è stato istituito il Centro di Documentazione presso il Parco naturale del Sacro Monte di Crea, al fine di offrire agli Enti, alle Associazioni, ai professionisti (progettisti, restauratori, operatori turistici, ecc.) l’opportunità di rapportare le proprie esperienze con quelle degli altri. In primo luogo con la consultazione del materiale bibliografico, fotografico e audiovisivo, accrescendo poi le dotazioni del Centro stesso con l’invio dei propri lavori, ma soprattutto stabilendo relazioni e promuovendo progetti comuni. Come si è verificato in occasione della redazione di questo Atlante dei Sacri Monti, Calvari e Complessi devozionali europei, che non sarebbe mai giunto a buon fine senza l’appassionata, disinteressata e convinta collaborazione degli studiosi e ricercatori che hanno accolto il nostro invito. La stessa disponibilità manifestata anche dalla pluralità dei referenti istituzionali e professionali ringraziati nelle pagine iniziali del volume e che costituisce essa stessa una preziosa "rete" di possibili interlocutori per ulteriori approfondimenti. Attenzione alle nostre richieste che, in molti casi, è andata ben oltre al normale assolvimento delle proprie funzioni di lavoro ma che si è manifestata con contributi personali di cui siamo loro grati.

IL CENTRO DI DOCUMENTAZIONE

L'indagine è stata suddivisa in quattro aree di interesse: storica
(cronologica, devozionale), artistica (materiali, tecniche), ambientale (vegetazionale,
paesistica), gestionale (tutela, finanziamenti, fruizione). Particolare
attenzione è stata posta alla configurazione urbanistica del luogo con la
richiesta della relativa topografia. Sono stati interpellati circa 2.000 Enti pubblici europei (Statali, Regionali, Locali, Culturali e Turistici) delle seguenti nazioni: Austria, Belgio, Francia, Germania, Italia, Lussemburgo, Olanda, Polonia, Portogallo, Slovacchia, Spagna, Svizzera, Ungheria. Successivamente, a seguito delle numerose indicazioni pervenute da István Szilágyi, sono stati segnalati sulla Carta allegata al volume dell'Atlante,anche i siti delle seguenti Nazioni: Repubblica Ceca, Ucraina, Slovenia, Croazia, Jugoslavia, Lituania, Romania, in un primo momento non comprese nella ricerca. Altre segnalazioni sono state fornite da: Elżbieta Bilska-Wodecka, Polonia; Martin Čičo, Slovacchia; Paulina De Nijs, Belgio, Olanda; Francisco Singul Lorenzo, Portogallo Spagna |

THE RESEARCH The main purpose of the survey was to identify and carry out a systematic census of devotional complexes resembling Sacred Mounts and Calvaries. This publication is the outcome of the two main aims of the study: to compile a European site map to be enclosed with the book and to set up a specific Documentation Centre. In the first case, despite the evident differences in cataloguing between one country and another, the current Site Map represents an indispensable working instrument which will serve as a stimulus to complete the study and fill the gaps with new surveys. At a more general level and with a view to enhancing these sites, the preparation of the Map will allow us to create new promotional itineraries linked by common religious, cultural and environmental factors. Moreover, the Site Map “automatically” involves a large network of bodies and individuals who will be offered a chance to discuss common themes, matters that can no longer be postponed, regarding the protection, conservation and management of these complexes. Piedmont Region and the Sacred Mounts of Belmonte, Crea, Domodossola, Ghiffa, Orta, Varallo, which were set up as Parks and Nature Reserves, will contribute to this debate by making available the results of over twenty years of work. The Documentation Centre was set up at the Nature Park of the Sacred Mount of Crea for this purpose, namely to offer Authorities, Associations, professionals (planners, restorers, tourist operators, etc.) an opportunity to compare their own experience with that of others. Firstly, by consulting bibliographical, photographic and audio-visual materials, and then adding to the Centre’s resources by submitting their own work, but above all by establishing relationships and promoting joint projects. This was the case during the work on the Atlas of Sacred Mounts, Calvaries and Devotional Complexes in Europe, which would never have been successfully completed without the enthusiastic, disinterested and whole-hearted collaboration of the experts and researchers who accepted our invitation. The same willingness was also shown by the numerous institutional bodies and professionals whose contribution is acknowledged in the introductory pages of the volume and which also represent a valuable “network” of possible interlocutors for further studies. In many cases, the care taken in responding to our requests far exceeded the normal fulfilment of their professional duties and instead was enriched by personal contributions for which we are grateful. |

THE QUESTIONNAIRE The questionnaire is the expression of an organic and systematic catalogue which, based on individual answers, takes into consideration the various types of Sacred Mounts, Calvaries and Devotional complexes to be found in Europe. It was compiled by a working group comprising civil servants and directors working in Piedmont Regional administration and reflects the experience of managing and running these complexes acquired by the Piedmontese Sacred Mounts after they were set up as Protected Areas. The pertinence of the questions and the different situations represented by individual sites was confirmed by the answers received which showed that questionnaire had proved relevant to common themes. The survey was then divided into four areas of interest: historical (chronological, devotional), artistic (materials, techniques), environmental (vegetation, landscape), management (protection, funding, use). Special attention was focused on the town-planning configuration of the site by requesting the enclosure of a topographical map. The questionnaire was sent to some 2,000 European public organisations (State, Regional, Local, Cultural and Tourist) in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Holland, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary. Subsequently, after several indications submitted by István Szilágyi, sites in the following countries were also marked on the enclosed Map: Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Lithuania, Romania, which had not initially been covered by the survey.
